Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Social media has become an influential tool in development communication, offering unique opportunities for grassroots engagement and awareness campaigns. In Bida Local Government Area of Niger State, social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Twitter are increasingly being utilized to disseminate information on health, education, agriculture, and governance. Social media enables development organizations, local government authorities, and community activists to reach large and diverse audiences, including rural populations that might otherwise be excluded from traditional media campaigns. This study explores the effectiveness of social media as a tool for development communication in Bida, focusing on its role in enhancing public awareness, facilitating community engagement, and promoting social change (Akin & Shehu, 2024). It also examines the challenges that arise from using social media in a largely rural setting.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While social media has the potential to drive significant changes in development communication, its use in rural and semi-rural areas such as Bida faces several challenges. These include low digital literacy, limited internet access, and socio-cultural barriers to online engagement. Additionally, the use of social media for development communication in Bida has not been systematically studied to evaluate its true impact. This study will investigate how social media is being employed for development purposes in Bida and will assess its effectiveness in addressing local issues and engaging the community in development initiatives. It will also examine the barriers to the optimal use of social media for development communication in the area.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to a deeper understanding of the role of social media in development communication, particularly in rural Nigerian settings. It will provide insights into how social media can be leveraged to improve community engagement, promote public health campaigns, and encourage active citizen participation in development initiatives. The findings will be useful for government agencies, NGOs, and community organizations aiming to improve their use of social media for development purposes.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
